When you misread someone, you are often looking at yourself.
Kui is fire above, lake below — directions opposed. Kui does not ask you to erase difference, but to learn to live beside it. Every close relationship has its Kui moments: you think you understand him, he thinks he understands you, and each was only seeing himself. Small matters bring good fortune: do not wrestle over the large; keep understanding in the small, and opposition slowly eases.
One scene is vivid: a man in Kui sees a muddy pig as a cart of ghosts. Suspicion breeds dark ghosts — what he sees is his own fright. So Kui at its extreme reverses: the place of deepest misreading is precisely where you believed you understood.
